Trekking in Mcleodganj: A Journey to Remember

Mcleodganj is a suburb of Dharamshala in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is known as "Little Lhasa" or "Dhasa" because of its large population of Tibetans. The Tibetan government-in-exile is headquartered in Mcleodganj which treats the suburb as its Capital-in-exile. Mcleodganj is also a popular destination for trekking enthusiasts who want to explore the scenic beauty and cultural diversity of the Himalayas.

There are many trekking routes in and around Mcleodganj, ranging from simple to difficult terrains. Some of the most famous treks are:

  • Triund Trek: This is a short and easy trek that takes you to the base camp of Triund, a grassy meadow with a stunning view of the Dhauladhar mountains on one side and the Kangra valley on the other. The trek starts from the Main Square in Mcleodganj and goes through a mixed forest of oak, deodar and rhododendron. The last one kilometre is steep and challenging, but the reward is worth it. You can camp at Triund or return to Mcleodganj on the same day. The trek takes about 4 to 5 hours one way.
  • Kareri Lake Trek: This is a moderate trek that takes you to the Kareri Lake, a high altitude glacial lake that is frozen for most of the year. The trek starts from Ghera village, which is accessible by bus from Dharamshala. The trail follows the Kareri river and passes through dense forests, green meadows and rocky terrains. You can camp at Kareri village or near the lake. The trek takes about 6 to 7 hours one way.
  • Indrahar Pass Trek: This is a difficult trek that takes you to the Indrahar Pass, a high mountain pass that connects the Kangra valley with the Chamba valley. The trek starts from Triund and goes through steep ascents and descents, snow-covered trails and rocky patches. The pass offers a panoramic view of the Pir Panjal range and the Manimahesh Kailash peak. You can camp at Lahesh cave or return to Triund on the same day. The trek takes about 8 to 9 hours one way.
  • Trekking in Mcleodganj is not only an adventure but also a cultural experience. You can witness the rich Tibetan culture and heritage in the form of monasteries, temples, museums and festivals. Some of the places to visit are:

  • Dalai Lama Temple Complex: This is the residence and main temple of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. The complex has a serene atmosphere and a beautiful garden. You can see monks chanting and meditating, join them for prayers or listen to their teachings.
  • Library of Tibetan Works and Archives: This is one of the most important institutions for preserving and promoting Tibetan culture and literature. The library has a collection of over 80,000 manuscripts, books, documents, artefacts and photographs related to Tibet's history, religion, art and science.
  • Bhagsu Waterfall: This is a scenic waterfall that cascades down from a height of 20 metres. The waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery and rocky cliffs. You can take a dip in the pool at the base of the waterfall or enjoy a cup of tea at one of the cafes nearby.
  • Naddi View Point: This is a vantage point that offers a breathtaking view of the Dhauladhar range, especially during sunrise and sunset. You can also see the Dal Lake, a small lake that reflects the colours of the sky.
